COVID-19 Safety Protocols

& CDC Resources

Contents below were copied from Home page on 6/20/24:
COVID VARIANTS & FLU PROTOCOLS:
The safety of all our Highpoint Families remains a priority for us.  We will continue to take every precaution possible as we follow the CDC's Operational Guidance for K-12 Schools and Early Care and Education Program to Support Safe In-Person Learning.
Given new evidence on the B.1.617.2 (Delta) variant, CDC has updated the guidance for fully vaccinated people. CDC recommends universal indoor masking for all teachers, staff, students, and visitors to K-12 schools, regardless of vaccination status. CDC says COVID variant EG.5 is now dominant, including strain some call "Eris". However, Governor DeSantis signed into law a Bill prohibiting both public and private schools from mandating use of masks or vaccination; (see below.)

KEY POINTS:
  • People who are infected but asymptomatic or people with mild COVID-19 should isolate through at least day 5 (day 0 is the day symptoms appeared or the date the specimen was collected for the positive test for people who are asymptomatic). They should wear a mask through day 10. A test-based strategy may be used to remove a mask sooner.
  • People with moderate or severe COVID-19 should isolate through at least day 10. Those with severe COVID-19 may remain infectious beyond 10 days and may need to extend isolation for up to 20 days.
  • People who are moderately or severely immunocompromised should isolate through at least day 20. Use of serial testing and consultation with an infectious disease specialist is recommended in these patients prior to ending isolation.

NOTE:
On May 11, 2023, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed Senate Bill 252, Protection from Discrimination Based on Health Care Choices, into law. The bill, enrolled as Chapter 2023-43, included the following requirements for all public and private school institutions in the State of Florida.
  • Section 381.00319(2)(a), F.S.
    • An educational institution may not impose a mandate on any person requiring vaccination with any vaccine defined under s. 381.00319(1), F.S.
  • Section 381.00319(3)(a), F.S.
    • An educational institution may not require a person to wear a face mask, a face shield, or any other facial covering that covers the mouth and nose.
    • An educational institution may not deny any person access to, entry upon, service from, or admission to such educational institution or otherwise discriminate against a person based on such person’s refusal to wear a face mask, a face shield, or any other facial covering that covers the mouth and nose.
  • Section 381.00319(4)(a), F.S.
    • Notwithstanding s. 768.39, F.S., the Department of Health may impose an administrative fine not to exceed $5,000 for each individual and separate violation of this section.

REQUIREMENTS FOR RETURNING TO SCHOOL:
In order to do our part to help prevent the spread of Covid-19 and keep our Highpoint Families as safe as possible, all students returning to school the first week of January will be required to provide one of the following:
____Proof that your child already tested positive during the last ninety (90) days and has fully recovered from Covid-19. Students who have recently tested positive, have completed their minimum isolation days, and do not have any symptoms, do NOT need to provide us with a negative result.
____Proof that your child tested with an at-home reliable antigen test or a PCR
(nasal or oral) and the result was Negative.

Additionally, we will need a verbal statement every morning during drop-off stating that your child has no flu symptoms.

WILL MY CHILD BE REQUIRED TO WEAR A MASK TO SCHOOL?
Although it will NOT be mandatory for students to wear masks since it's currently not a required MDCPS or DOH protocol, we're confident that the large majority of our Parents will send their child to school wearing their Highpoint masks. A limited number of Highpoint masks are available at our Main Office; (we will not be providing or allowing disposable masks.) We will continue to take as many safety protocols as possible, including having students avoid close contact for long periods of time, disinfecting classes often with Electrostatic Sprayer, continue temperature reading in our kiosks upon entry, hand washing requirements, etc.

NOTE:  All Highpoint Administrators, Teachers, and Staff will be wearing a mask at all times while indoors.

WHAT HAPPENS IF MY CHILD TESTS POSITIVE?
These latest protocols require a child to stay home for five (5) days. After five days from the day they tested positive, they can return to school if they have no symptoms.  They also will be required to wear a facial mask while indoors for five (5) additional days.  We will provide "PARTIAL VIRTUAL" instruction during those five days.  This means that Teachers will be in direct contact with them in the morning and afternoon to give them instructions.  All assignments will be posted on each Class Website.

Please send an email right away to [email protected] if your child, or a close family member that's been in direct contact with your child, tests positive.

WHAT HAPPENS IF MY CHILD HAS BEEN IN CLOSE CONTACT WITH SOMEONE THAT HAS RECENTLY TESTED POSITIVE?
Students in "close contact" are required to follow the steps indicated.  There are many factors that determine length of quarantine, if any (5 day minimum per CDC guidelines). We urge our Parents to test their child prior to sending them to school. We also strongly encourage these students to wear a mask while indoors.  Children with symptoms will not be allowed in class and will need to go home right away.

Although we know that this Omicron variant is not resulting in serious illness or death, we also know that it's extremely contagious. As we all know, this situation is very fluid and subject to change, so we will continue to keep our families informed and updated.

As always, our priority is the safety and well being of all our Highpoint Family members so your understanding and cooperation is appreciated.
